You've navigated to Almtuna
scoutkår's (Almtuna Scout Troop) web page. We're a
Swedish scout troop with members that usually live in and
around the city of Uppsala. We use to have our scout activties
at Ekbacken,
our scout cottage, which is located about 10 kilometres
to the northeast of Uppsala city.
Together with other scout troops in Uppsala and in the area
around Uppsala we form
Upplandsslättens scoutdistrikt, our
district. The district itself belongs to
SSF
(Svenska scoutförbundet), our scout association.

Something that is quite unique to scouting in Sweden is that
we don't split girls and boys we have our meetings
together.
There are four official scout associations i Sweden, but only
one association per country is allowed in
WOSM (World
Organisation of the Scout Movement) and
WAGGGS
(World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts). Hence
we have SSR
(Svenska scoutrådet), in which all Swedish scout
associations are members. SSR makes it possible for each scout
in Sweden to have a membership in either WOSM or WAGGGS.
Almtuna Scout Troop was founded in 1959 by parents in the
quarters 'Almtuna' and 'Petterslund' in Uppsala, Sweden. In
the beginning the scouts used a soldier's cottage outside
Uppsala for their activities. However, the cottage wasn't
large enough and therefore we decided to demolish it and
build a larger house. But where should we get the material
from? Well, at this time the construction work of Arlanda
International Airport was done and since they didn't have any
use of the temporary houses the workers were using, we
received them (the houses, not the workers) and they formed
what today is 'Ekbacken'. Apart from some repainting there
hasn't been a lot of changes since Ekbacken was built.
Until the late 90's we held some of our meetings in the
basement of Almtunakyrkan (Almtuna Church), as our former
chairman was the janitor of the church. It was simpler for
people to come there than to Ekbacken. However the premises
got affected by mould so we don't have our activities there
any longer.
Today our troop consists of around 100 scouts and, of course,
our beloved Ekbacken. Almost every scout meeting is held there
nowadays. We have tracking scouts (8-9 years), discovering
scouts (10-11 years), adventuring scouts (12-14 years) and
challenging scouts (15-18 years). The challenging scouts have
their own cottage to which younger scouts aren't allowed to
enter.
